Shakespeare in the Classroom

Shakespeare in the Classroom is a program developed through Capitol Shakespeare to bring Shakespeare to a larger audience and help break the stigma that “Shakespeare is too hard to read.”

The curriculum focuses on the breaking down of Iambic Pentameter and the many ways Shakespeare uses it.  By breaking down the beats and language we help students find the meaning behind the words.  The curriculum also discusses briefly the time period in which Shakespeare wrote and how that affected his work and his storylines.  In the classroom readings are performed from Shakespeare’s sonnets as well as his literature to better exemplify the idea of pentameter.  It is stressed in these classes that Shakespeare wrote these works as plays and so there are many different interpretations of his words and no answer is truly “wrong.”  If given advance notice, the leader of these classes may perform pieces from the play currently being read by the students.

Shakespeare in the Classroom is structured for a standard 50 minute class schedule but can be easily stretched to a block schedule time period as well.
