Please join us for Family Day on July 24th at 3:30 p.m. We will have a variety of vendors including food and drinks.

The Taming of the Shrew is one of Shakespeare’s most beloved and well-known comedies, it has been adapted many times for plays, movies and TV sitcom plotlines. Some of the most well-known adaptations are the musical Kiss Me, Kate and the movie 10 Things I Hate About You.

This play revolves around the Katharine, who is the eldest daughter of Baptista Minola. Katherine refuses to be married off to a man simply because her father has decreed she should. Katherine’s younger sister Bianca wants to marry but cannot until her older sister marries due to another decree from their father. Bianca’s suitors Gremio and Hortensio conspire together to find a husband for Katherine. Hortensio’s friend Petruchio comes to town at just the right time and says he will “woo the wild cat.” Thus the trouble begins.

Meanwhile, a new suitor throws himself into the group to court Bianca, he is a nobleman of Pisa named Lucentio. Lucentio and Hortensio disguise themselves as teachers in order to spend more time with Bianca. During all this, Petruchio and Katherine marry, in a very eventful ceremony, and he takes her home to Verona.

Will Bianca marry her true love and will Katherine truly be “tamed?” Come and see for yourself this summer!

Shakespeare in the Classroom is a program developed through Capitol Shakespeare to bring Shakespeare to a larger audience and help break the stigma that “Shakespeare is too hard to read.”

The curriculum focuses on the breaking down of Iambic Pentameter and the many ways Shakespeare uses it. By breaking down the beats and language we help students find the meaning behind the words. The curriculum also discusses briefly the time period in which Shakespeare wrote and how that affected his work and his storylines. In the classroom readings are performed from Shakespeare’s sonnets as well as his literature to better exemplify the idea of pentameter. It is stressed in these classes that Shakespeare wrote these works as plays and so there are many different interpretations of his words and no answer is truly “wrong.” If given advance notice, the leader of these classes may perform pieces from the play currently being read by the students.

Shakespeare in the Classroom is structured for a standard 50 minute class schedule but can be easily stretched to a block schedule time period as well.

For more information regarding the curriculum, cost, or to schedule Shakespeare in the Classroom for your school contact Erin Drevlow at: erindrevlow@hotmail.com
